Recently, I’ve been engrossed in many things; mainly books and video games. I’ve immersed myself into the worlds of Mass Effect, Dragon Age, and Star Wars. When I’m not engrossed in those things I’m either at work or playing with my children.
A question has popped up somewhere in the back of my mind often times lately: Why do I get so easily swept up in these fantasy realms? The answer, I realized, is quite simple.
REALITY SUCKS!
The proof is everywhere. Every time I peruse the news I become more sickened with society and humanity in general. We have politicians all verbally attacking each other. Not because they’re fighting for you or I, but for their own personal gain. Watching the local news is a waste of time. It is nothing but the weather report and another homicide or bank robbery.
Across the globe belligerent tyrants threaten peace everywhere. Iran and North Korea wish to annihilate at least two countries a piece. Syria, the latest in a string of Middle Eastern nations to do so, is killing its own citizens.
The world is on the brink of total economic collapse and even if that somehow does not come to pass scientists predict that there will be a world-wide shortage of natural resources in the next 40 years because we just don’t know when to stop popping out babies.
As if all that crap wasn’t enough, a series of racial altercations have cropped up recently, starting with the murder of Trayvon Martin.
There is no good news to be had anywhere. I’m sure there are heart-warming stories to report, but people are only interested in seeing the dark side of humanity. That’s why shows such as Jerry Springer, Maury Povich, and Cheaters can thrive. People enjoy watching others suffer and its fucking sickening.
Normally I wouldn’t pay attention to most of these things but when I’m bored at work surfing news sites is about all I can do.
Perhaps I’ll start taking my books to work with me and I can get lost in alternate realities there as well, because, quite frankly, I’ve had enough of this one.
To preserve sanity, everyone has to tune out from time to time. But don’t worry. I’ll tell you what to think
.
Oh, good. Thanks for that.
If you want my advice, not that you asked, but maybe it is time to stop looking at the world through the news…there is still goodness to be found. And when you share the goodness that is in you with the world, then we can find even more…Sorry that reality sucks this way…God bless, brother…
Well, the only goodness I find is under my own roof spending time with my family. I don’t know where else to look for it because no one else seems interested in it.
Being a family guy is so underrated…That is awesome that you can see goodness in your family! I so understand what you mean though…it is rough out there, but there are a few of us out there trying to do good. I don’t know if it’s working based on the obstacles that we have created, but, eh…
Do you guys like TNG too? I was just wondering because I was going to try to do some kind of discussions with some of the episodes from there over the summer. I just watched a movie that my boys like called Essential Space Collection from the Science Channel. I bought it from them a couple of years ago. It is too bad this world can’t get its stuff together so that we could do some exploration….God bless, brother
What’s TNG?
Star Trek: The Next Generation…sorry…
I’ve never really been into any of the Star Trek shows. I like most of the movies, but for some reason I don’t find the shows as entertaining.
Maybe that’s why I love to watch movies and read so much… it makes sense now. Reality does suck.
Although I can’t lie, I love watching other people’s lives go down the toilet. Maury is one of my favorite shows and Cheaters is pretty fun to watch too. With that said, I think it’s crap that we can get our dose of bad shit on shows like that, but the news still can’t give us anything good.
I remember a few years back a friend of mine worked at this place and they decided to do something for the homeless to give them some work and a little money. They had this huge thing set up and they had gotten three of the news networks locally to come by and do a story on this great thing happening. None showed up because there was a fire somewhere and they had to report that instead.
That is sickening, and I hate it. But what can you do? Besides read a book and play some games…
Yeah, that’s about it. I find no joy in watching others’ misery. And people going on national TV to tell other people that they cheated on them while sitting next to the person they cheated with is classless, mindless “entertainment.”
What really used to get me (when I actually saw an episode of Jerry) is that at the end of the show he gets up on a moral high-horse with his “Final Thoughts.” Something about a guy who wrote a rubber check to a prostitute spouting morals just isn’t right…
And don’t get me started on the tramps that bring 20 different guys onto Maury’s show and still can’t find who the father is…that’s pathetic.
LOL Yeah, pathetic, yet for some reason I can’t get enough of it. The way I feel about that particular incident, Maury, is, if they’re going to put themselves out there like that, then I’m going to watch it lol. Obviously they have no class, because they slept with upteen men and have no clue who the father is. So why not throw it out in the public eye? Even trash needs their 15 minutes of fame, right?
Uh, no. Trash is just that. Trash. Who wants to see trash?
Apparently I do.
To each their own, I guess. I’d be perfectly content if everyone that stupid (to go on the shows) would just completely disappear.
Well, I would too. But since they’re here, I’m going to enjoy them.
I’m glad to have been blessed with an overactive imagination so I can avoid reality for the most part.
Yeah, reality blows… I like my pretend worlds so much better.
Firmly agree.
Firmly? How lewd.
Aw….I thought you’d appreciate that.
I truly did. Well done.
