Recently, I’ve been engrossed in many things; mainly books and video games.  I’ve immersed myself into the worlds of Mass Effect, Dragon Age, and Star Wars.  When I’m not engrossed in those things I’m either at work or playing with my children.

A question has popped up somewhere in the back of my mind often times lately:  Why do I get so easily swept up in these fantasy realms?  The answer, I realized, is quite simple.

REALITY SUCKS!

The proof is everywhere.  Every time I peruse the news I become more sickened with society and humanity in general.  We have politicians all verbally attacking each other.  Not because they’re fighting for you or I, but for their own personal gain.  Watching the local news is a waste of time.  It is nothing but the weather report and another homicide or bank robbery.

Across the globe belligerent tyrants threaten peace everywhere.  Iran and North Korea wish to annihilate at least two countries a piece.  Syria, the latest in a string of Middle Eastern nations to do so, is killing its own citizens.

The world is on the brink of total economic collapse and even if that somehow does not come to pass scientists predict that there will be a world-wide shortage of natural resources in the next 40 years because we just don’t know when to stop popping out babies.

As if all that crap wasn’t enough, a series of racial altercations have cropped up recently, starting with the murder of Trayvon Martin.

There is no good news to be had anywhere.  I’m sure there are heart-warming stories to report, but people are only interested in seeing the dark side of humanity.  That’s why shows such as Jerry Springer, Maury Povich, and Cheaters can thrive.  People enjoy watching others suffer and its fucking sickening.

Normally I wouldn’t pay attention to most of these things but when I’m bored at work surfing news sites is about all I can do.

Perhaps I’ll start taking my books to work with me and I can get lost in alternate realities there as well, because, quite frankly, I’ve had enough of this one.
