It’s been a while since a participated in the Daily Prompt. Although I’m sure you’ve all had withdrawals, I commend you for your perseverance for, uh, persevering through those tough times. But I’m back, and I’m here to alleviate your pain. Or add to it, depending on your point of view. Eh, fuck it.
Here goes nothing.
I tend to agree with this statement. While I myself – that’s a little redundant, don’t you think? - don’t succumb to anger when discussing religion or politics, a good portion of people do. I tend to avoid conflict wherever possible because, well, I can’t stand it. Arguing and fighting are pointless. Nothing will ever get solved if voices are raised and anger is raging. Nobody can think coherently during those moments. So I try to avoid them if possible.
Precisely.
Some of the most commented and hotly debated posts in this very weblog (that’s what those extremely complimentary web bots call it) have been religious or political in nature. I respect, or try to, other’s opinions whether or not they concur (like a doctor) with me, but normally the debates always end up right back where they started because neither person will concede their position and it usually ends with me saying enough is enough since nothing is getting accomplished.
This is usually what a majority of political or religious discussion devolve into.
I do my best to respect the views and beliefs of others, I really do. But I tend to avoid those conversations when at all possible because most people are very passionate about them.
What about you, dearest reader? Do you enjoy discussing politics are religion with others? In your experience, how does that normally turn out?
Check out these other great Daily Prompt posts:

Let’s argue about the color green, shall we?
What about it?
It’s got a lot of purple in it, don’t you think?
Hmm…I never noticed, but now that you mention it…
I am spiritual, but not religious, so I avoid that conversation as much as possible and I think the majority of politicians are giant blow holes, spewing their crap and talking in circles, so that one is off my conversation table as well. People get too fired up about making others agree with their opinions. Opinions are like belly buttons, we all have one. I think I need more coffee.
Go get a refill, and then head back.
I’m on caffeine overload now…..feelin’ good.
I should be working, but just can’t do it….fail.
You’re welcome.
Got any must-reads I should take a look at while fucking the proverbial dog at the office? You may or may not say all of them….but pick a few.
Um, why are you fucking a dog? Ewww……..
And, idk, scroll through my history I guess. I like all my work equally (that really means I’m too lazy to go pick out some).
Fail.
Yeah, I’m trying to catch up on all the blogs I follow. It’s gotten really tough lately cause I follow so many great blogs…
I know what you mean. I think I’m averaging 5 hours sleep a night….I miss those 8 precious hours, but the reading is awesome and meeting some great people doesn’t suck either.
No, no it doesn’t.
In fact, I have to find time somehow to put a Blunt Life Coach post and three award acceptance posts in somehow soon. Along with all the other stuph that comes along that inspires my fingertips to say stuph.
That’s a lot of stuph. Guess I should leave you to it and stop distracting you with nonsense. Maybe I’ll start with the Blunt Life Coach posts.
There’s only two of them so far, not including the plea for questions, that is…
Maybe I’ll send in some random questions after getting a better idea of what I’m in for…..
Ha ha. Okay.
Haha….holy shit….these are gonna have to be some good questions.
lmao
Ooh, leave this with me for a bit…I love a challenge!!
Um, okay…
Your answers are going to be inescapably blunt and make me feel like an idiot, aren’t they?
I hope so.
Those answers are awesome! Well done. Have you had anyone send any in questions yet?
Oh yes. I have lots of them. But since I’ve been busy with moving, working, and other assorted business I haven’t gotten around to making a post yet.
I’ll be looking forward to it….you need to clone yourself!!
No shit.
I guess I should be productive and write my post for tomorrow since I have to curl tonight. Ah, Canadian winters…..
Curl? You mean that thing with that huge air hockey-like thing and ice?
You bet!! When you live in a town with 800 residents in the winter and no entertainment, you pretty much grasp at whatever is available. It’s actually quite challenging and a lot of fun.
I can only take your word for it. Watching it on TV, however, was the suck.
Welcome back…twindaddy’s DP is back…life’s not empty anymore…being libertarian, I don’t even try. No one gets it.
Ha! A for effort?
Sure, i’ll take it since I wasn’t even trying.
. You get one too.
Defending the undefendable is a mind opening read. You might not agree morally, but logically a lot of it makes sense.
Eh? Is this a book, I presume?
It is. You presume correctly. Enjoy if you choose to read. No offence taken if you don’t. The examples are extreme. The prerequisite is an open mind.

I only enjoy those conversations when the person you are discussing with is mature and can grasp the concept of agreeing to disagree. Talking about it, even if you are debating, can be a great exercise in opening your mind… I always say. Or it can be a great exercise off getting someone to slap the shit out of you (not quoting from personal experience).
I don’t mind discussing things of this type with open-minded individuals, such as Elyse, but most people (in my experience) get pissed off and hostile when these topics come up. I don’t have time for that sort of drama so I try to avoid it altogether.
Agreed Twindaddy, agreed.
It’s different when both people have an open mind toward the topic. But usually no. Why start an argument when it can be tactfully avoided by discussing porn?
Tell me more about this…porn.
I love intelligent conversations with people from different perspectives than mine. One night, a friend of mine, who’s on the “other side” politically, and I stayed up late talking about politics. There was an “aha” moment when we realized that one of us trusts business more than government while the other one trusts government more than business. It was really as simple as that.
That IS a great conversation, but how many people do you think you could actually do that with? Most people tend to get irate when you tell them you have a differing opinion. At least, in my experience they do. Especially on these here interwebs.
Oh, definitely. I tread lightly and try not to wear my opinions on my sleeve. With this person, we both know that each other watches “the other” news station, so we go to some effort to speak in neutral language, stick with facts, etc. I definitely have to feel people out. Just this past Saturday I got too comfortable with a new acquaintance and regretted it. British guy. Bats**t insane.
Hahaha. You don’t have to censor your words here, I have a Parental Advisory label on the blog. It’s all official and stuph. You can say shit guilt-free.
Ha! Sorry, it’s a carryover habit from my own blog, I guess. Or maybe from my not-so-distant babysitting days.
THIS guy though, holy crap. He was like, “…when Obama promised free hospital stays.” And I was like, “Free wha-? Are you talking about universal healthcare?!” This is after he insists some poor British chick was American because her father was American. I stayed at that table WAY too long.
Yeah, there’s some looney’s out there for sure.
I rarely talk politics with anyone, not even my husband.
I will discuss religion type stuff with people I really know/trust, and occasionally on my own blog- hopefully in a non-offensive manner, if that makes sense. If it doesn’t make sense then *snort* WooHoo!
The woohoo™ is trademarked. Pony up the royalties, sister.
The rubber check is in the mail!
*WooSnortHoo*
Oh, man. Those are the worst kind.
“Nothing will ever get solved if voices are raised and anger is raging.” Uh oh. I’m in trouble.
Yeah, I was for the longest time, too.
I’ll debate politics or religion with anyone mature and level-headed enough, whether I know the person well or not. I don’t mind if the debate ends with us “agreeing to disagree” because it still allows me to hone my arguments.
Yes, I know you will. You’re very different than most people in that regard.
Much to your chagrin, eh?
Not at all. Sometimes I just feel like we keep repeating ourselves, though, and that’s when I’m finished. I appreciate your point of view and the way in which you convey it. I really do.
Thanks, that’s good to hear.
I mean it.
I try to stay away from the topic as well. It’s just hard when two people are coming at it from two completely different worldviews. And it’s not the kind of perspective where the other person can say, “Well, okay, I can see your point,” because if they as strongly believe in their own faith (which could include not believing in anything at all), then the other person’s perspective will be so much in opposition to theirs. So…I’m steering clear.
Precisely. Well put.

It all depends on the context. I have just finished a Masters Degree in Politics and Public Policy. Obviously that involved a lot of
discussion about such things with people I hardly knew, but when everyone is open minded and approaches it in a similar way it can be very interesting. I do agree that these coversations usually end in agreeing to disagree but if one is open to it there’s often things to be gained along the way.
Well, you’re lucky. I don’t meet very many open-minded individuals.
Oh that’s a shame. I tend not to discuss religion only because I know so little about other faiths apart from the one I was brought up in. Outside of Uni I don’t discuss politics much either because you’re right, it does often end in conflict.
I avoid this topics like the plague if I can help it. I don’t mind debates, in fact, there once was a time when I enjoyed them! Until an ex-bf came around who could not handle others’ opinions without finding a way to personally insult that person. It got to the point where I just clammed up if anyone mentioned anything I didn’t agree with wholly because I didn’t want an argument on my hands. Slowly, I’m moving out of my comfort zones once again
Uh, oh. LOOK OUT!
Last year we drove through Texas. We had the choice to listen to
a) Christian Radio stations, or
b) news and chat shows about the upcoming elections on radio stations or
c) western music radio stations last year,
I had my fill. Pass.
That is exactly why I don’t turn my radio on. I don’t get to choose the music and I’m inundated with idiotic commercials. No thanks. I play my own music.
Thanks for the pingback and the laughs! Your posts are hilarious to read with all their bluntness. :]
Why thanks! And you’re welcome!
