The year is drawing to a close. What would you put in a 2012 time capsule?

Hmmm…  This is an interesting question.  And to be honest, I really don’t have a clue.

I guess we could start movies.  Batman and Spiderman would definitely be placed in the capsule.  Along with a Blu-Ray player to play them.  After all, if this capsule is eventually discovered, our technology will be antiquated.  Also, The Avengers would have to be in there, since it is one of the best movies ever.  Also, the upcoming Hobbit movie would have to be included.  I obviously haven’t seen it yet but I’m betting it will be good.

Music?  I don’t think I’d put in music in there.  It’s embarrassing, at least to me, what passes for popular music today.  Gangnam Style?  Nicki Minaj?  Justin Bieber?  Will. I. Am?  Taylor Swift?  Chris Brown?  Embarrassing.  All of it.  It’s all a big, steaming, nasty pile of suck.

2012 was also an election year, although a forgettable one.  Other than Mitt Romney honestly, but unwisely, pissing of 47% of the population because they get free stuff from the government and calling them out on it and Barack Obama’s inane “you didn’t build that” rant, we didn’t get anything but pathetic, and childish, political banter.  Oh, and Obama was reelected.  We all lost.

Makes sense, right?

I guess I’m not really that good at this.  I’m obviously out of touch with what the majority of Americans like (and strangely, I’m okay with that) so I guess I’m not really a good judge of what to put in a 2012 time capsule.  Oh well…

Why I Support the Second Ammendment

There has been much ado about the 2nd amendment in the past year or so.  There has been much speculation that Obama, without fear of NOT getting re-elected, will use his second term to attempt to repeal the 2nd amendment.  For those of you too slow to keep up, the 2nd amendment grants US citizens the right to bear arms.

Gun abolitionists use every killing spree as evidence that guns should be banned while supporters of the 2nd amendment stand by it as a constitutional right that cannot and should not be taken away. They also point towards the crime statistics of the UK, which skyrocketed after they abolished guns a few years ago.  After all, guns don’t kill people.  People with damaged brains and guns kill people.

Our founding fathers originally added the second amendment to our constitution as a means to defend freedom from a tyrannical government.  Namely ours.  Many supporters of the 2nd amendment take this to heart.  I personally know one person who is stocking up guns and ammunition in anticipation of the coming revolution.  I don’t know what revolution is coming and if there is one brewing I hope it’s avoided.  I’d hate for this country to suffer through another civil war.  I’d hate it even more if it happens in my lifetime.  Or my children’s lifetime.

We definitely don’t need to do this again.

I don’t wish for our right to bear arms to be used for a revolution, although I don’t disagree that drastic changes need to be made in the way our country operates.

But Twindaddy, you support the 2nd amendment.  Why do you support it if you don’t agree with the founding fathers?

I’m glad you asked, dearest reader.  This is why…

This is obviously a satirical video, but hopefully you understood it’s point.  Unfortunately, there are evil people out there who would rob you, rape you, beat you, or kill you for their own nonsensical and deranged reasons.  I believe the 2nd amendment provides you with a means to defend yourself and that means should not be taken away.  Let’s face it.  Anyone who believes that criminals won’t be able to obtain firearms if they are outlawed is foolish or naive.  Or both.  Abolition of alcohol certainly didn’t stop people from making and distributing it.  The abolition of marijuana and other illegal drugs certainly doesn’t stop addicts and potheads from obtaining them.  Make no mistake, if guns are outlawed criminals will still have them and you, the law-abiding citizen, will not.  And how will you defend yourself when an armed robber fearlessly invades your home knowing you have no way to shoot back?  His pistol has a longer reach than your Louisville Slugger I bet.

If a robber with a gun breaks into your home what would you rather have? This or your own gun?

Should there be stricter gun laws?  Probably.  In some states it’s all-too-easy to obtain a firearm legally.  As my blogging buddy Elyse over at Fifty-Four and a Half has repeatedly declared, a psychiatric test should be administered in addition to a background check when you attempt to buy a firearm.  I have to agree with her.  Most of these people that go on killing sprees have some sort of mental illness.

I’ll admit that I don’t have all the answers when it comes to gun control.  I don’t know how to solve the problem.  But I do know that taking guns away from law-abiding citizens will make this country a more dangerous place to live.  Especially since die-hard NRA and 2nd amendment supporters will likely NOT give up their firearms without a fight.  And then we WILL have a civil war on our hands.

So, please, folks.  Give up on abolishing guns.  It is not the answer.

Mitt Romney hits magic number

This is my first attempt at a satire article.  Please let me know how I did, even if it’s to let me know I should never attempt this again.

Mitt Romney hit the GOP’s magic number today, gaining the 1144 delegate votes needed to make him the party’s unofficially official presidential candidate.  He can’t officially be named the GOP’s nominee until August 27, when the Republican National Convention is set to be held.

Romney received the remaining 78 needed delegates from the Lone Star state, otherwise known as Texas, a state that has produced many winners in the past, including George W. Bush and Rick Perry.

After receiving a projected 152 out of 155 delegates in Texico, Romney said he was humbled to have become the GOP’s nominee.

“I am very  honored and flattered that I was able to get a bunch of extraordinarily bigoted Christians to vote for me, a Mormon.  Now, come this November, our country’s citizens will have to choose between a Mormon and a black guy who supports gay marriage and charge him with the task of running this country further into the ground.  I am confident that on November 6, this country vote for me, the guy with the stay-at-home wife, of whom everyone is jealous,” Romney wrote.

Romney was pretty much a shoe-in for the nomination as all of his competition has fallen by the wayside.  Rick Perry dropped out when he realized nobody cared that he doesn’t want gays in the military.  Newt Gingrich ran out of money pursuing votes for the moon base, and Rick Santorum dropped out because of an illness in the family.  Nobody has seen or heard from Ron Paul in weeks, and he’s presumed dead.  Michele Bachmann dropped out after she was advised that this was a rich, old man’s party and that she had the improper equipment.  Herman Cain bowed out in December amid allegations of sexual misbehavior so plentiful and heinous that Bill Clinton sued for copyright infringement.

Romney began his quest for presidency last June.  During a gathering at his New Hampshire farm he declared that Barack Obama had failed America because he uses words most Americans don’t understand.  “Is there really a need for the amount of syllables the president uses?” he inquired of the gathered crowd.  “I don’t understand half of what he’s saying!”

Romney is the first Mormon  presidential candidate of a major party in…ever.  Asked if his religious beliefs would influence his policies, Romney declared, “Boy will they ever!” enthusiastically before continuing to say, “My administration will redefine marriage to be between one man and however many women he wants.  Every wife will have to sign a wife agreement.  Oh, and gay marriage?  Yeah, it’ll still be illegal.  In fact, we’ll make being gay illegal.”

Asked about Romney winning the nomination, president Barack Obama said, “Mitt Romney?  That Mormon guy?  That’s who they’re going to run against me?  Shit, I can stop campaigning now and still win.”

I know, I know.  It’s been forever since I posted some random thoughts, but I’ve been extremely busy recently.  Our work force at, uh, work, was reduced and in addition to my everyday duties I had to learn a new job plus study for test for a new IT certification.  I have passed the test and hopefully things will be settling down at work allowing me to spend more time posting.  These posts take an hour or two to complete as I scour the internet looking for stories interesting enough for me to comment on.  So, without further ado….

• The NFL’s Sunday Night Football in America program dethroned American Idol as this year’s most highly rated show.  The fact that American Idol was dethroned was great.  It was even better that it was the NFL that did it.
• If Kelly Clarkson introduces her new boyfriend and nobody cares, does she really have a boyfriend?
• Good news!  The senate is attempting to address the growing problem of student loan debt.  But there’s bad news.  The senate is attempting to address the growing problem of student loan debt.  I guess this is somewhat of a win that it’s being addressed at all, but the two rival political parties can never agree on anything.  Both parties had their proposals voted down yesterday.  An A for effort?
• Last night, President Obama declared that he’s not an “over-spender”.  The $5 trillion he’s added to the national debt seems to say he’s full of shit.
• Bill Clinton posed for a picture with some porn stars who happened to attend a charity event he co-hosted last night.  And the shit has hit the fan.  I have multiple questions.  Who cares who Clinton posed for a picture with?  Who cares what Hillary will think?  Why were there porn stars at a charity event?  And finally, how did those chicks become porn stars?  They are freaking ugly.
•  Hillary Clinton admitted that the US has hacked into Yemen and Al Qaida websites being used to recruit new members.  The question I desperately wanted an answer to went unanswered:  Did the backlash of her make-up free photo last week encourage her to wear make-up last night?
• The state of New York is looking to outlaw anonymous internet posting.  I’ve already opined on this subject and I hope this law fails.  What a waste of time.
• Presidential hopeful Mitt Romney laid out a plain to tinker with the education system if elected president.  He blames the teachers’ unions for taking hard-line stances and refusing to change with the times for our “third-world education.”  I have no idea if the teachers’ unions are truly responsible, but I do know these two things:  our eduction system sucks and all unions have become way too powerful.  Both need to be taken on.
• It seems people get their feathers ruffled over extremely ridiculous things these days.  A Dallas-based pizza chain has announced an offer to give a free pepperoni pizza to customers who can order in Spanish.  A member of the Conservative Caucus has said that only English should be spoken in public places and a member of a Hispanic Market Group called it discrimination (really?).  Look, people, this is a privately owned chain and if they want to give their pizzas away to people who speak pig-latin, wear their pants on the ground, have Justin Bieber haircuts, and walk into the joint doing a handstand while wearing a kilt then they have every right to do so.  Get over yourselves already.
• Disturbing news from Florida (is there any other kind from that state?).  A 17-year old student was having a full-blown asthma attack in school.  The student had his inhaler taken away and was not permitted to use it because there was no parental consent form signed.  Stupid, but they have to protect themselves from lawsuits.  HOWEVER, the school nurse just locked the boy in a room and watched through the window while the young man suffocated.  What the fuck?  I understand that you’re not permitted by school policy to administer medicine to him, but why would you lock  him in a room to die rather than call 911?  Doesn’t this kind of behavior violate nurse ethics?  Aren’t they supposed to help if they can like other medical professionals?  This school is going to get lit up by the lawsuit that is undoubtedly coming at them.  I don’t normally agree with suing people, but when a school grossly neglects one of its students then it should get what it has coming.  Had that been my kid I might have clocked that nurse after walking in to the office and finding her watching my son suffocate to death.  BUT, both of my children had signed forms and carried their inhalers with them…
• There’s another viral internet meme making the rounds.  When will internet memes go away?  They are so 2011…
• The Sunlight Foundation has determined that Republicans sound dumber than Democrats.  After listening to the likes of Newt Gingrich, Rick Santorum, and Rick Perry, I have no choice but to agree.
• A couple of female soldiers have sued to remove the US military’s ban on women in combat.  Quite frankly, this move is long overdue.  There isn’t true equality if women don’t have the same rights and responsibilities as men in our military.
• A Pakistani doctor has been sentenced with 33 years in prison by a Pakistani court on treason charges related to his divulging the information of Osama bin Laden’s whereabouts to US forces.  It seems to me that if that is considered treason in Pakistan then the Pakistani government knew exactly where bin Laden was and was purposefully withholding that information from the US.  To me, that means Pakistan is a US enemy.  I doubt it will happen, but they should send the Navy Seals back over there to smuggle that guy out of the country.  He should not be punished for doing what’s right, but no good deed goes unpunished, right?
• Some idiotic pastor (otherwise known as Charles L. Worley of Providence Road Baptist Church in Maiden, N.C.) delivered a hate-filled anti-gay rant to his congregation recently.  This hate-monger thinks we should build a big fence and put all of the “queers and homosexuals” inside and leave them there until they die.  What’s even more disturbing are the cheers from the audience as he speaks these heinous words.  When the church (any church, not just this one) starts to wonder just why fewer and fewer people are attending church, perhaps they’ll finally see the hypocrisy of promoting hate and intolerance while preaching about a peace-loving God.
• Is it time to legalize marijuana?  A recent poll says that 56% of Americans think so.  As for myself and the limited amount of research I’ve seen, weed is statistically safer than alcohol and cigarettes so I say yes.  Legalize it, regulate it, and tax it.  Nobody should be in jail for possession of dope.  There are people committing far more despicable crimes than getting high that we can prosecute and fill our jails with.  What do you think?
